Q: My 1996 saturn sl2 is making this siren noise?
My 1996 saturn sl2 is making this siren noise I think its coming from the engine the noise stops at higher speeds but at 35 mph and lower makes this annoying sound what could it be also makes the sound when it starts up
A: loose or slipping fan belts, are probably making the noise, it stops as the RPMs get higher the faster you go. then when you slow down they start making the noise again. Tighten up the belts. with the tension pulley on the belts.

Q: My keyless entry remote doesn't work on my 1996 Saturn SL2.?
The car is equipped with a locktronics anti-theft system. I noticed that the locktronic key under the dash has an LED light on it but this light is not working. Does this device have a battery that operates the light? Could the locktronics system be malfunctioning causing the remote keyless entry system to be disabled? How would I go about testing these theories? Thanks for any help or advice that you may have.
A: The device requires a nicad battery. I think it has not power after 12 years.

As far as i know, Dexron II has been replaced with Dexron III, which has a couple more detergents and a AntiFoam additive. any local parts store, or large gas station will have this fluid available. Capacity: Automatic--- with filter change 3.75qts Automatic--- New or Rebuilt with no previous fluid 7.75qts Manual---2.6qts
Q: where is cooling fan relay on 1996 saturn-sl2?
A: Do you want to install a manual fan switch? It's on the driver's side engine compartment. It's the third cube-shaped relay posterior to the front of the car. I'll find some links with photos for you. You'll need to wire it to ground for it to actuate the fan. http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23668 Photo on this one posted by Impulse93: http://www.saturnspot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27060 (The second set of photos are for 1991-1995 First Generation Saturns) If your fan isn't working, it's more likely the fan motor. You can get them fairly cheap, probably in the $30-40 range. Good luck.

Q: I'm thinking about buying a 1996 Saturn SL2 with 44k .... anyone have any experiece with SATURNS ??
A: My son had that car and he loved it. It got great mileage, to boot. But then his brother borrowed it and left it in overdrive or something and that was the end of the car.
Q: 1996 Saturn SL2 problem.?
I just got my full exhaust replaced. (Everything except the header) I noticed while driving the car that when I brake the engine makes three reeving sounds in a row then stops. Could this be a sensor malfunction? Or something else. No it does not down shift or stall. It does it when I stop sounds like I'm hitting the gas three times, then the engine just goes back to normal.
A: Hmmm Not really sure what to think unless the Throttle position sensor is out of whack, or some other sensor is sending out false readings, could be an 02 sensor if you had your exhaust replcaced, this is the most likely cuplrit if it started after exhaust replaced. Does the check engine light come on? Take it to a shop and have then read the datastream values off each sensor and see if any are out of spec range.
Q: 1996 saturn sl2 stalling?
i JUST (this morning) got my car fixed and inspected, and i had been having stalling problems recently. my mechanic replaced the o2 (?) -oxygen sensor- and the car ran fine the first few miles. I went up a very long, steep hill, and had to drop from 5th to 4th gear. (it's a 5-speed stick shift) When I got to the top of the hill, the car stalled out. I tried to start it 3 times, and it wouldn't start. Then I let it sit for a few minutes, and tried again, and it started right up. does anyone know if this is normal, or maybe i hit a 'dry spot' in the gas, or just a bad sensor? thanks! i've been with him for 3 years, i know he won't rip me off. and he checked the alternator, its fine. the battery was dead, he put a new one in this morning. took it out today, ran fine. Put half a tankful of BP 93 octane in. (filled the tank) I seem to only have this problem on that one hill. (I live in western PA, and these hills are mountains!). I had no surges, no hesitation or sputters , in 20 miles today. The car ran better than it has since I bought it in April. Could it be that I put fuel injector cleaner in, and it sat 1/2 a tank full for two weeks, and maybe just hit an 'emoty' pocket? Don't know. Maybe I'll just avoid that blasted hill.
A: New Info Answer: First, I hate to be blunt, I know you like this guy but as for the sensor it's a safety issue and it would NEVER EVER be the problem. The Government safety standards require the engine still runs if there is total sensor failure, period. Regardless you got one. If it stalls while running it's not the electriciy then it can be only one of two things. (Did he trickle charge the battery, it might not hurt to check the charge yourself). It's the gas. The line is plugged or the filter is pluged or you need a new pump. Or some kid put water in the gas (or some garage watered down their gas). It's the ignition coil. Only other possibility is that you need new rings, it's probably not that, but if you do, your talking about big $$$$. I'll assume he checked the pressure though and I'd eliminate that one as the cause, I'd be surprised if it was the rings but there is a very remote chance. But really, I'd take it to a second mechanic. To me the sensor is a red flag. Cars stalling while running are generally easy to fix.
Q: Can someone please tell me where the starter is located on a Saturn sl2 1996?
And can i take my car to like autozone or somewhere and get my starter and alternator checked for free? when your starter go bad on a saturn sl2 what type of problems do it give, and if the alternator goes bad what problem would i have? Also is it true that on saturns you need to always keep up the oilchange? will the motor blow and you have oil in it? how often do you suppose to change the oil in a saturn i just go to work and take kids to school.
A: Behind the motor next to the firewall. If I remember correctly. Not pleasant place to work on with a repair rack to raise it up on. Oil changes as normal 3 months 3000 thousand miles. Just keep up the regular recommended maintenance and you should run for a long time. I'd still have mine if I didn't get run over by a moving van. And by the way they can take a hit and you will probably walk away just fine. I like Saturn and will definitely buy another one!
